Sofia

Before getting into coding, Sofia was a civil engineer who felt a little lost in her career. She had taken some coding classes in university while studying civil engineering, but had never considered it as a separate career path. After she quit her job, she started looking for something to do next. Sofia had a couple of friends who had changed their careers by doing coding bootcamps to become web developers; she decided to follow in their footsteps. After trying out Codecademy online to see if she had a real interest in coding, she decided to look for some courses that were offline.

“I prefer to learn in person with other people, like you do in SheCodes. It’s more advantageous because you can ask questions and get immediate answers.”

In her search, she found SheCodes and it seemed like a perfect fit for her.

Sofia graduated from a SheCodes Workshop in December 2018 and then SheCodes Plus in March 2019. She thought SheCodes was a great introduction to coding and that motivated her to take SheCodes Plus. She really enjoyed the small class size and the format of the course.

“In SheCodes Plus, I loved that the theoretical classes were online and recorded, so we could see the videos many times if we had doubts. I also really liked that the exercise classes were in person so everyone could help each other and ask questions.”

In her opinion, you work really hard, but you learn a lot in just six weeks, especially while working on the project.

“The project was really good because I got an idea about how a web developer has to work.”

She also thinks it was a really good experience to learn with other women.

“There is a little percentage of women in this sector of the world. SheCodes gives women a good chance to learn web development and it’s a nice environment.”

Sofia also completed a 4 month bootcamp to continue her coding journey. 

Before SheCodes, Sofia was stuck doing a lot of office work as a civil engineer. In her previous job, she contributed to the process of creating buildings and other structures; however, she never actually got to see the finished products. Unfulfilling aspects of her previous job such as this led to her decision to change careers and become a developer.

“When I do a line of code, you actually see something happening. For me it’s more stimulating to see the final product.”

In Sofia’s opinion, a job as a web developer has many more perks than a job as a civil engineer. She has seen more progress in her career and also has a higher salary, more flexible working hours, and a cooler working environment compared to her more serious and rigid working environment as a civil engineer. 

Sofia believes that SheCodes and SheCodes Plus were definitely good investments.

“If I had to do it again, I would. For me it was very logical. First the SheCodes workshop, then SheCodes Plus, and now a bootcamp. Great stepping stones to further my career as a web developer.”

Sofia is is currently working as a Web Developer at Decode. She couldn't have gotten to where she is today without SheCodes.
