Emily’s journey from Teaching to Software Development!
🙍♀️ Before SheCodes
Introducing Emily 🇦🇺! Originally from Australia, Emily was a dedicated primary school teacher and a tech enthusiast. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two beautiful little girls. They love outdoor activities, especially walking and bike rides, and enjoying the beach during the summer. 🏖️ Living by the coast allows them to spend a lot of time outdoors as a family, making the most of the beautiful weather.
Emily’s career journey began as an IT business consultant in Australia and London before she transitioned into teaching. For the last five years, she has been a primary school teacher who has always looked for ways to integrate technology into her classroom. At her school, she automated many processes with tech solutions and implemented SharePoint across the school ecosystem. Although she loved teaching, she was consistently drawn to technology.
“I really wanted to do it myself but lacked the skill set. I decided to start SheCodes while on maternity leave with my youngest daughter so that I could finally bring all my side projects to life without having to pay someone else to do it.”
Emily has always been a tech enthusiast, working on various side projects and even starting her own startup a few years back. In this project, she had to collaborate with developers to bring her web app to life. This sparked her interest in learning how to code so she could handle these projects herself without relying on external help. The final push came from the feedback she received from investors, who suggested she needed to find a CTO. Determined to acquire the skills herself, Emily decided to dive into coding with SheCodes while on maternity leave with her youngest daughter.

🙋 How SheCodes has Helped to Change Her Life
After SheCodes, Emily took her learning even further. The strong foundation she built with SheCodes allowed her to further her coding education into back-end development, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the full-stack development process. This helped her build side projects and land her first job as a Software Developer. Without SheCodes, this journey would have taken her years, but she managed to transition from teaching to software development in under six months.
Emily is now working as a full-stack software developer for a boutique software development agency specializing in custom integrations. She has already built some fascinating projects and continues to learn every day. Her role includes writing statements of work, reviewing reports and other documentation, writing code, and creating beautiful web apps. She’s proud of how far she’s come and continues to grow in her new career. 🌟

Emily has some valuable advice for future SheCodes students. She encourages everyone to dive in and start. Follow along with the challenges and push yourself by applying the knowledge to create something similar but slightly different. Keep this process going!
