Matilde

Matilde enjoys spending time with her recently-adopted dog 🐶 and is a very athletic person - she loves kickboxing, CrossFit and sometimes weightlifting! 🏋️ She also has a passion for creating ceramics on the side of her full-time work.

Matilde was employed as a communication designer when she started studying with SheCodes. She didn't feel fulfilled in this role - she wanted to work in design with a focus on creating products to answer a specific need. She realised that UX design would be ideal for her - but her experience in tech was limited. She felt that in applying for UX jobs, she needed to know more about code and the 'why' of a well-functioning website or app.

"I was considered again a junior designer to most companies I applied for and I didn't see myself as a 'tech' person. For example, code was a nightmare to me. I never thought I would be able to understand even a simple line of code!"

Matilde felt that SheCodes was the right place to learn about code after reading so much positive feedback from other women who have studied with us.

"I always had support from the team when I had doubts or questions...they didn't just give us a solution, but they guided us to achieve the right answer and guaranteed that we understood how to achieve a specific result."

Matilde found that the help available from the SheCodes team was especially valuable. It wasn't simply about being given a solution but helping students work their way towards understanding it. We believe this is the best way to help students solve problems independently in the future!

"Having the videos online and available so we can rewatch them as many times as we want is great...Matt gives us a lot of tips and shares with us a lot of helpful resources so we can feel more independent while coding."

 "I really enjoyed it and it wasn't expected. I just wanted to have some know-how about HTML and CSS and I ended up learning React...and considered a career as a developer!" 

SheCodes gave Matilde the confidence and know-how to support her career switch to UX Design. It's not a core part of the job like in front-end development, but it's still very important to have that understanding of the 'how' and the 'why' of a website and app.

"SheCodes help me to understand more about the digital industry and it was a huge advantage to my CV. All the recruiters loved to know that I knew how to code and that gave me my first job as a UX/UI designer because it was essential for them that the person they would hire knew how to communicate with the developers."

Matilde is currently working as a UX Designer and UX Manager! 🥳 SheCodes helped her to demonstrate to companies that she had the soft skills and understanding for regular communication with developers.

"I can understand now that there's nothing impossible in code but there are things that take more time and require more effort from the team. When working with agile methodologies we have to meet deadlines so I can't design something that will make it more difficult for us to achieve our goals." 

For Matilde, the support network at SheCodes was essential. She advises that anyone hesitant to learn should jump right in - the team and the SheCodes community is here to help! 🙏

"Don't be scared to start, most of us didn't know anything about code when we started. The team is amazing, Matt explains everything very well and makes it look simple. You will never feel unsupported because everyone helps."
