Amanda enjoys exploring the outdoors 🏔️, oil and watercolor painting 🖼️ and crafting. She's always worked in a variety of different jobs, but most often in customer service and hospitality.

"After I had my daughter in late 2019, I wanted a secure career for my family. I was researching the job market and found web developers was a popular search result. I thought it would be a good fit for me, as I like creating and the logical aspect of developing."
 

Her research also brought her to SheCodes! It was important to Amanda to obtain certificates for her studies, which is smart thinking. If you want to make your coding ability useful in applying for jobs, you need to prove to employers and recruiters what you know!

Amanda says that SheCodes appealed to her for this reason. She was also looking for a program that could offer a structured learning style, the flexibility to study part-time while she could focus on childcare, and general affordability compared to a lot of other coding classes and bootcamps out there.

Structured learning was a very important factor for Amanda in choosing the right coding class. She found that the step-by-step video lessons and small challenges allowed her to gradually build her knowledge from the beginner level. 🪜

SheCodes gave Amanda the key skills for her current job - from the fundamentals of Basics all the way to the sophisticated design elements in Responsive!

"The skills that I have acquired from SheCodes that are valuable in my current job are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Although my company uses PHP language, learning JavaScript through SheCodes has helped me understand the fundamentals of PHP language."

Amanda also says that SheCodes gave her the essential confidence needed to pursue her dream of a career in web development. She now works as a Junior Web Developer in Ontario, for one of the largest boat companies in Canada! 🛥️ The ability to code well makes it possible to work in various industries, not only for tech companies!

"My tasks include ensuring company websites are updated regularly, taking Photoshop designs and turning them into website functions, developing new applications and pages, helping to contribute to Salesforce development if the need arises, and I will sometimes help the Marketing team with various tasks as well."

Amanda's role also means that she works with a variety of people with different skillsets. As a web developer, you will have the chance to gain a lot of experience doing this - it's a much more collaborative, team-working career than a lot of people think. You will be sitting in meetings with colleagues and team members, having the opportunity to use your skills to help them and gain an understanding of what their goals are. It's a very sociable job!

Amanda's advice is to learn as much as you can! If you take on all the workshops, you will pick up a lot of valuable digital skills in the job market - not only for web development roles but all kinds of jobs!

“This workshop gained me so much knowledge that I thought wouldn't be possible, courses are well instructed by Matt and he articulates in a way that is easy to understand. The team of instructors are speedy at answering any questions and resolving any issues that you may run into also! I had a lot of fun building my final project - I am looking forward to Plus! :)”
