Vivian

Presenting Vivian, a SheCoder currently living in London, UK! She’s one of our recent graduates who has utilized her coding knowledge to become a Software Engineer at J.P. Morgan! 🤩

She likes baking and staying active in her free time. She also enjoys running an online shop called VandTAccessory. She studied Economics in University and gained some experience in asset management afterwards. She started learning how to automate some of her work using programming and thought it was really enjoyable. Hence, her interest in coding was born! 😄

“I did an Economics degree and landed a job in Asset Management. We used a lot of Excel so I learnt VBA to automate my work. I found this really enjoyable so I discovered different coding languages and did YouTube tutorials on Python etc.”

Then, she stumbled upon SheCodes on social media and decided to give it a try! We’re so glad that she did!!

Vivian started by joining SheCodes Free Coding Class and then jumping into an advanced workshop. She was motivated to join because she was intrigued by the software engineer lifestyle and wanted to see if it was a field she was actually interested in.

She tried a few other platforms for learning how to code before SheCodes but wasn’t motivated to complete the lessons and couldn’t get help along the way. She really enjoyed the setup and support offered by SheCodes in comparison! And we were so glad to have her join the SheCodes community! 🙌

Vivian’s favorite parts of SheCodes were the homework and the community feel. The homework left her feeling motivated and satisfied, and the welcoming community encouraged her and allowed her to meet other like-minded students. 💜 She thinks that SheCodes is a great platform for beginners or those who don’t yet know if they enjoy coding. 

Thanks to SheCodes, Vivian was able to land a role as a Software Engineer and make her dream of living life as a software engineer come true! 🤩 The skills she learned in SheCodes - along with her projects and enjoyment of coding - proved to be very helpful in getting her new role, especially during the interview process!

“I was also able to talk about SheCodes and my projects during my interviews which was a big bonus. I could also talk to interviewers about what I enjoyed about coding, all from which I learnt when doing SheCodes. SheCodes really played a big part in me landing my job.”

Vivian is now working as a Software Engineer at J.P. Morgan in the Corporate Investment Bank sector of the firm. She mainly works in UI and handles maintaining, improving, and adding features to the platforms that their traders use. She’s currently working from home with a very international team! 💻 🌎 She also has the chance to put her SheCodes skills to good use!

“I actually use React and JavaScript/Typescript in my job now so SheCodes definitely helped.”

Her job now is different from her previous jobs in asset management in that she is constantly learning, gets to partake in more problem-solving, receives a higher salary, and enjoys the work culture more.

“I’m constantly learning. I felt like in my old job, I had stopped learning as much and I wished for more technical tasks. The salary is great. I like the different culture of working with programmers compared to my old job. I enjoy problem-solving and Software Engineering is a lot of problem-solving.”

In the future, Vivian would like to code some personal projects - we can’t wait to see what she creates! 😄 

Vivian thinks that investing in SheCodes is worth it - because even if you don’t want to become a coder for your career, coding skills are useful. We agree! 😊
