How Emma fell in love with coding thanks to SheCodes Plus React and how it changed her life.
🙍♀️ Before SheCodes
Emma is a highly motivated SheCoder who discovered a new passion for coding during her journey with SheCodes. She is from Portland, Oregon, USA and is still living there today. Emma has been studying Psychology and Spanish to receive a Bachelor of Arts from Portland State University. Along with her studies, she’s also had various roles in the hospitality industry. Her studies and work have kept her busy, but she also makes time for her hobbies like cooking - and now coding! A change in her job status spurred a desire for a new career path.
“Unfortunately, I lost my job due to COVID. Before that I worked in hospitality and am also a full time student studying psychology and Spanish.”
She’s had an interest in coding for a while in order to keep up with the increasingly technological world and be able to understand the language of developers.
“I've wanted to learn to code for a long time. As technology has become a bigger part of the world, it's impossible to ignore that programmers and engineers have a huge influence on our lives. The more I've realized that, the more I've wanted to be able to understand their language.”
Then, she found out about SheCodes and decided to give it a shot 💪 💻

Emma found that SheCodes was approachable and was happy that it could easily work around her schedule. She enjoyed the learning process, how the workshops were designed, and realizing the power of code.
“SheCodes was so approachable! It's designed for beginners, I could try out the three week course before committing to the more difficult sections, and I could make it work around my schedule.”
“The learning process was incredible. With every lesson, I felt like I was discovering a new world. Gaining that knowledge was so powerful and so much fun. Some concepts were harder than others, but the way the course is designed meant that nothing felt impossible. As I became more knowledgeable about coding, I was also able to understand other resources, which opened up even more opportunities for learning and creativity. Realizing how vast the coding world is was super energizing and exciting to me. I went from not even knowing what coding was to wanting to do it all the time.”
Emma didn’t try any other online coding workshops before SheCodes because she’s found that they often require a lot more time and money than she wanted. We’re glad that she ended up joining SheCodes and couldn’t be happier to have her in our wonderful coding community 😍
“The SheCodes community was a huge inspiration. Seeing others trying to solve the same issues I was helped keep me motivated and provided great support when I was feeling stuck and frustrated.”

👩💼 Advice to Future SheCodes Student
Emma advises to start with the beginner workshop and then decide if you’d like to continue, but warns that you might just fall in love with coding along the way 😉
“If you're thinking about it, do it. The first three weeks don't require much time, and will help you figure out if coding is for you. If you don't like it you can always stop after that, but there is a chance that you will fall in love with it and it will change your life like it did for me.”
