How SheCodes helped Laura transition from English Teaching 👩🏫 to UX Designer 🎨 and finally, Front-End Developer 👩💻
🙍♀️ Before SheCodes
Originally from Mexico and currently living in Yucatán, Laura 🇲🇽 loves learning new things. One of her favorite hobbies is learning languages because she enjoys discovering new cultures and perspectives. She speaks Spanish, English, French, and Italian, and is currently learning German. She has also started learning to play the piano and taking self-defense lessons to build her confidence and stay active. 🌎 🎹
When it was time to choose what to study at university, Laura wasn’t completely sure which path to take. Since she had always been good at English, she decided to pursue a Diploma in English Teaching. During this experience, she developed valuable skills in teamwork, communication, time management, and adapting to different situations. She also met amazing people and made connections that meant a lot to her.
Even though she appreciated everything she was learning, Laura felt drawn toward something more. She wanted to explore her creative side and find a way to make a bigger impact on the world.
Her interest in coding had started back in middle school, when she learned some basic HTML and web design. She enjoyed it, but as a girl, she heard comments like, “Math and computers aren’t for you.” These stereotypes affected what she believed about herself.
During the pandemic, Laura decided to challenge those ideas and start developing her coding skills. She faced moments of self-doubt, but as she continued learning, she started becoming more confident in what she could achieve.
“With every line of code I wrote, my confidence grew. I started to see that even the smallest skills I picked up were stepping stones to something bigger.”
👩💻 Her SheCodes Experience
After exploring coding on her own, Laura wanted to take her coding journey to the next level and enrolled in our Bootcamp Workshop. She felt she needed guidance to strengthen her skills and build confidence in areas she found challenging.
Laura discovered SheCodes through social media and decided that she’d attend the SheCodes Free Coding Class first. She was attracted to its community approach, its focus on making coding accessible to women, and the structured yet flexible workshops for her schedule.
For Laura, learning alongside other women was an important part of what made SheCodes stand out.
“What inspired me the most, though, was the idea of learning alongside other women who are also breaking barriers in tech.”
Laura found a strong sense of community and support during her SheCodes experience. She felt surrounded by women who genuinely wanted to see each other succeed. She also enjoyed the well-structured and engaging workshops, which broke complex concepts into manageable lessons.
She especially loved the hands-on learning and building real projects she could be proud of. One memorable moment came when she spent hours stuck on an exercise. She felt frustrated and close to giving up, but instead, she went back to the lessons and worked through the problem piece by piece. Slowly, everything started to click, and she figured out what had gone wrong. 💪 💻

🙋 How SheCodes has Helped to Change Her Life
SheCodes gave Laura the skills and confidence to work with code, identify issues, and implement solutions. The practical tips she learned about structuring code have also helped her work more efficiently.
Laura was initially hired as a UX Designer in her current role. After completing the design phase and demonstrating her coding skills, she was also given front-end development tasks. Today, she is responsible for maintaining and updating her company’s website. This dual role has allowed her to grow both creatively and technically. 💻 ✨
The impact also went beyond her work. SheCodes helped Laura rediscover her love for problem-solving and creativity and gave her more confidence to take on challenges she once thought were beyond her.
She also feels more confident speaking with others in the tech world and connected to people who share the same passion for learning and creating. For Laura, that sense of belonging has been one of the most empowering parts of her experience.

👩💼 Advice to Future SheCodes Student
Laura’s advice to future SheCodes students comes from something she learned during her own experience: don’t be afraid to make mistakes and ask questions.
When she first started, Laura was very focused on getting everything right and put unnecessary pressure on herself. Over time, she realized that mistakes are an important part of learning. The more she allowed herself to experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them, the faster she improved.
Her advice to other women beginning their coding journey is simple:
“Trust the process, be kind to yourself, and know that every mistake is just a stepping stone to growth!” 💪✨
