Laura

With SheCodes, Laura has found the type of career change that she had been looking for. Previously, she worked for a commercial property management organisation, carrying out quality data checks on legal documents and managing properties on behalf of clients. Away from work Laura enjoys spending time in nature, doing yoga 🧘‍♀️ and reading. 📖 

Laura knew that she wanted to move into a more creative career direction and do something that made her happy, but she wasn't sure what that was until she saw a SheCodes ad on Instagram which caught her eye.

"SheCodes was a great first step into web development. I loved the structure of the courses, the fact that we had homework and deadlines, the fact that it made me feel part of a community."

The community aspect of SheCodes was important for Laura, as it is for many SheCodes students. There is tech support available from the team but also a global community on Slack where you can interact with other users, trade ideas and ask for help when needed! 🙏 This feature of SheCodes has transferred well to her current job.

"Team work, communication and understanding designers is probably one of the most important skills in my job apart from coding. I have to be able to communicate well with the design team to understand exactly what products they want me to code and their functionality. There is a lot of back and forth, which can be frustrating but it’s all part of learning!"

Laura says that SheCodes has given her career a clearer sense of direction. She found value in SheCodes as a motivator for her to learn new skills, escape her comfort zone and challenge herself. 💪 Thanks to her new coding skills, she has a job in front-end development! 🤩

"I currently work as a Junior Front-end developer for a digital mobile advertising company. I work closely with a team of designers to build custom user interface elements, like games or 3D advertising experiences. We build and innovate new advertising products for luxury brands."

Laura emphasises the importance of getting involved in coding communities even beyond SheCodes, especially for women. Her advice is to find groups in your city or country, go to networking events where you can, join the extensive SheCodes community on LinkedIn and connect with other students and alumni in your area. 

Also don't be afraid to put your work out there! She advises it is important to be proactive and interactive with others as part of showcasing your coding skills. 

Above all, Laura stresses the importance of maintaining self-confidence and addressing problems with practical solutions.

"Imposter syndrome is real. There will be times when you feel like giving up, or when code seems impossible to understand. My advice is to take a break, come back to it with fresh eyes, break it down into smaller problems you can resolve step by step." 🔍
