Studio Ghibli Inc. is a Japanese animation film studio that was established on 15th June 1985, in Koganei, Tokyo. It was founded by the animators and directors Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao, as well as producer Suzuki Toshio. This was after the success of the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) by the animation studio Topcraft.
Studio Ghibli is widely known for its films that take you into a distant, magical world and create a sense of nostalgia. Five of the studio's films are listed among the ten highest-grossing anime feature films made in Japan, with Spirited Away (2001) being in second place and Princess Mononoke (1997) fourth. Many of their films have won the Animage Grand Prix award, four the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year and five have also been nominated for the Academy Award. In 2002, their film Spirited Away (2001) received the Golden Bear and the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. They even opened a Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan in 2001. Its attractions included exhibits about the animation and original short films from Studio Ghibli.
Unfortunately, on 3rd August 2014, Studio Ghibli decided to stop their
production after Miyazaki's retirement. Despite this, in 2017 it was
announced that Miyazaki would still continue to direct a new feature film
called
How Do You Live?
which is based on a 1937 novel and is intended to be released in the very
near future.
Fun fact:
The name Studio Ghibli came from the Libyan Arabic name for "hot sahara
wind", representing the idea that the studio would 'blow a new wind'
through the anime industry and is also the name of an Italian aircraft
(Caproni Ca.309.) used in World War II!
