Fort Jesus is a fort located on Mombasa Island, Kenya. It was built by
the Portuguese in 1593 to secure the port of Mombasa. Over the
centuries, Fort Jesus changed hands several times, with the Omani Arabs,
Swahili, and British forces among those who occupied and controlled the
fort. Its design incorporates a unique blend of European, Middle
Eastern, and local Swahili architecture, reflecting the diverse
influences of its various occupants.
Fort Jesus has witnessed significant historical events, including
battles, sieges, and the slave trade. In recognition of its cultural and
historical significance, UNESCO designated Fort Jesus as a World
Heritage Site in 2011. Today, the fort serves as a museum, offering
visitors insight into the complex history of the region, as well as
showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to its colonial past.
