Where is the Pyramid of Giza?

The Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Great Pyramid, is located on the Giza Plateau near Cairo, Egypt. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt, around 2580–2560 BCE, for Pharaoh Khufu. The pyramid is a marvel of ancient engineering, constructed with massive limestone and granite blocks. It originally stood at 146.6 meters (481 feet) but is slightly shorter today due to the loss of the outer casing stones. The Pyramid of Giza is significant for its historical and cultural importance, representing the architectural and technological prowess of the ancient Egyptians. Its construction has sparked numerous theories and debates about the methods used and the purpose behind its design, adding to its mystique and allure. Additionally, the Great Pyramid is believed to have served as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, with intricate passageways and chambers inside.

Why is it one of my Favourite Monuments?

The Pyramid of Giza is one of my favourite monuments for many reasons, one it is because it's an incredible feature of ancient engineering. Its massive size and precise construction showcase the advanced skills of the ancient Egyptians. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it holds a lot of historical significance, representing the achievements of that time. The pyramid's mysteries, like its alignment with celestial bodies, add an element of intrigue. It's also a symbol of ancient Egyptian culture and spirituality. The pyramid's iconic status, both globally and culturally, makes it a captivating and admired monument.

Alignment with Cardinal Points: The Great Pyramid of Giza is incredibly well-aligned with the cardinal points of the compass (north, south, east, and west). The sides of the pyramid are aligned almost precisely with the four cardinal directions. This level of accuracy in alignment is remarkable, considering the lack of modern technology during its construction.

Original Casing Stones: The Great Pyramid was originally covered with smooth, polished Tura limestone casing stones that reflected the sun's light, making the pyramid shine like a "gem." Over time, many of these casing stones were removed, revealing the rougher core structure we see today. Some casing stones still remain at the base of the pyramid.

No Hieroglyphs Inside the Burial Chamber: Unlike many other Egyptian pyramids and tombs, the interior of the Great Pyramid's burial chamber, where the pharaoh's sarcophagus is located, does not contain any hieroglyphic inscriptions or decorations.
