A typical dish from Honduras πŸ‡πŸ‡³

What are Baleadas?

Baleada
Baleadas are a typical dish very popular in Honduras. A baleada is a variant of soft tacos with a few differences. It is a traditional Honduran food that is made from flour tortilla and folded in half like a taco with a variety of fillings inside. Almost all varieties of the dish have mashed fried red beans and crumbled cheese inside with other ingredients. It originates from the north coast of Honduras. It's made from a flour tortilla, refried beans, sour cream and grated cheese. Baleadas can be filled with anything you want, kind of like a burrito.
This are some of the many ways to eat baleadas:
A "Bealeada Sencilla" or Simple Baleada is the classic one with the common ingredients: the fluffy, thick, flour tortilla, refried red beans, sour cream and grated cheese.
The Baleada Mixta which includes scrambled eggs and all the classic ingredients, this one of the most popular orders.
If you want to go over the top, order a "Baleada con todo" which adds to the previous ingredients avocados and a protein of your choosing which can be chicken, beef, chorizo or pork meat.
Baleadas are found in every corner of the country as street food and in restaurants. You can eat them for any time of the day!

The Baleada name has a lot of myths. The most popular one comes from a lady that sold Baleadas on the streets and one day got involved in a shooting, getting hurt from a bullet, which is "bala" in Spanish. Once she got better en returned to her selling spot on the streets people started calling her the "baleada" meaning "the shot woman". πŸ˜…

Another myth comes from many years ago when the recipe was made from boiled beans wraped in the flour tortilla. Once you bite the tortilla the whole beans fall resembling bullets. With time the recipe changed the beans for refried, smashed beans, but the name stood.
