Octopus for a Preemie is a registered UK charity (1180950). We knit and crochet sensory aids for babies who enter this world sooner than expected. The familiar feel of our octopuses and jelly fish tentacles reminds the baby of their mother's umbilical cord. This helps reassure the little one, and reduces the risk of the baby tugging at their tubes.
Anyone can get involved, and making the octopuses is easier than you may think. If you are in the UK, simply join our Facebook group and a coordinator local to you will be in touch to offer all the help and advice to help you get started. If you are in Ukraine, Poland, Spain, Austria or Denmark, you might be able to find OFAP initiatives local to you, too!
Don't worry! The charity often runs CALs (crochet-along) and KALs (knit along) where they will teach you everything step by step. Octopuses that don't quite make the preemie grade are given to babies born sleeping or used as sensory aids for the elderly with dementia. No make is wasted and they all have an incredibly special journey ahead of them! π
