Nizhyn overview Nizhyn or Nezhin is a
city located in Chernigov region of Ukraine. It is standing along
the Oster River about 80 km from Chernihiv and 130 km from Kiev, one
of most ancient cities in Ukraine. Population - 73,300 (2013).
History The first record of this
settlement refers to 1078; it was mentioned as Nezhatin. From 1147,
it was recorded as Unenezh. In 1625, the settlement became a
self-governing town and the name Nizhyn was used for the first time.
In the 19th century, the town received the status of the capital of
one of Chernihiv region districts.
Some interesting facts
The first monument to Nikolai Gogol in the world was erected in
Nizhyn. Nikolai Gogol studied at the local gymnasium. Today,
this institution is called the State Teachers Training
University named after N.Gogol.
Also, the city has the only in Ukraine museum “The Post Station”
Every year, the festival “Pokrovskaya fair” is held in Nizhyn.
It is the second largest fair after Sorochinskaya fair.
Also, the town is known for its tasty pickles. There is even a
monument dedicated to Nizhyn pickles on one of the city streets.
Nizhyn is a birthplace of the actor Mark Bernes, and the painter
Nikolai Samokish.
It is the town where Yuri Fyodorovich Lisyansky was born and
spent his childhood. He was a famous explorer, one of the
leaders of the first Russian travel around the world which he
made together with I.F.Kruzenshtern on the ships “Nadezhda” and
“Neva” in 1803-1806.
The first wife of Pablo Picasso - Olga Khokhlova - was born in
Nizhyn
