Who loves sports? I know I do-but specifically I love American Football!
Growing up, every Sunday would be planned around game time. The
anticipation of a game always made the day even more exciting, but once my
dad would put on his Jim Kelly jersey you knew it was time! American
Football (or just football depending on where you are) is a sport
consisting of 2 teams of 11 players. The offense, the team holding
possession of the ball, attempts to score a touchdown by running the ball
down the field to the end, also known as the endzone. The defense attempts
to stop them. The offense must progress a minimum of 10 yards in 4 plays,
if they are unsuccessful then the team playing defense will then have
their turn to be offense. Points are scored by either a touchdown or by
kicking the ball through the opponents goal post for a field goal. Each
game consists of 4 quarters, 15 minutes long each. At the end of the game
the team with the most points wins.
American football was first played in 1869 between two colleges, Rutgers
and Princeton. From 1880 onward Walter Camp then created a new set of
rules for the evolving sport. In 1920 the National Football League was
founded, consisting of 32 teams in two divisions playing against each
other for the chance at becoming the champions by playing in the Super
Bowl. Today, football is the most popular sport in the United States. Its
popularity is expanding to other countries through the expansion of the
NFL and playing games in various different cities around the world.
