Interesting Things to Know About Meerkats

They are not as harmless as they seem!

Meerkats are one of my favorite animals! Meerkats are native to South Africa, and they thrive in desert climates. They are super cute, and they're fun to watch (Shout out to my fellow Meerkat Manor fans!). With that being said, I definitely won't be holding or petting any... like ever. Despite how harmless meerkats may seem to be, they're quite aggressive animals.

Meerkats operate out of a matriarchal society. They live in large groups of up to 50 meerkats. These groups are called gangs or mobs, and are led by one dominant female meerkat. This dominant female is like the "queen bee" of the group. The dominant female meerkat is the most dangerous and aggressive in any gang or mob. This is due to reproductive competition. Female meerkats compete with other female meerkats to obtain dominant status. This means that she will be the only female in the group to reproduce. They will even fight to the death to secure this position.

Aggression aside, there are some other neat things to know about meerkats. For one, they are immune to several different types of snake and scorpion venom! Next, meerkats are not cats, nor are they closely related to them. They are actually apart of the mongoose family! Another interesting fact about meerkats is that they don't need to drink water everyday. In fact, they can actually go several days without drinkng any water! This is because they obtain most of their water by eating grubs and insects. Finally, they can live to be up to 20 years old!
