I've danced a long time, and I've tried pretty much every type of partner dance known to California, including the classic Ballroom styles like Nightclub Two Step and Waltz, and Latin styles like Salsa and Bachata. It took me years to discover West Coast Swing, and since I did, I've never looked back. Here are some of the reasons I keep dancing:
1. An Intellectual Dance
It's arguably the most challenging and technical partner dance in practice. It's married competition AND collaboration which gives dancers something to strive for; work towards, together. Conventions that are held all over the world center around not only the competitions and workshops, but also the social dancing that takes place early into the morning. In fact, that's probably what West Coast Swing dancers look forward to the most.
2. An Evolving Playground
West Coast Swing evolved in the mid twentieth century. It's such a new dance that there's vast room for influence from other dance styles you already have. You'll find a lot of Ballerinas, Latin and Brazilian Zouk dancers mingling in the crowds, and you might even recognize their dance style. This is a social dance, so playing off of and adapting to the dance style of your partner is a huge plus! Other dance styles are constantly inspiring what we currently know as West Coast Swing, in the most fun way!
3. We Can Dance Till We Drop
The good news is, once you've mastered this dance, no-ones pressuring you to quit. With Ballet, there's a time when you retire. Not with West Coast Swing. A lot of people don't discover it until retirement, truth be told. The investment of blood sweat and tears to master the dance can be enjoyed even past when your feet don't work like they used to. The social dancing will be here along with all of us of varying levels of skill; so you'll still fit right in.
