Yoga ( 'yoke' or 'union' ) is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in
ancient India and aim to control (yoke) and still the mind , recognizing a detached witness-consciousness untouched by
the mind (Chitta) and mundane suffering (Duḥkha).
What are the different styles of physical yoga?
A few well known physical yoga styles are;
Hatha - Is the physical practice of yoga (performing asanas/postures)
Ashtanga - Was created by K. Pattabhi Jois in 1948 and is known for its repetitive sequences, adjustments, and intensity
Vinyasa - Is ashtanga yoga that does not follow a fixed set of postures
Power - Is high intensity vinyasa yoga
Iyengar - Was created by B. K. S. Iyengar in the 1960's and is known for its attention to alignment
Restorative - Is a therapeutic form of passive static stretching where props are used to support the body and help it stretch without engaging muscles
Yin - Is slow-paced style, incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with active asanas that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles
