You can't achieve educational equity without first acknowledging and then addressing the systemic impact of racism on schooling. This is why teachers and leaders should commit to the work of becoming antiracist educators.
The anecdote to racism is not colorblindness or erasure; it is antiracism. An antiracist educator is someone who turns the lens inward to examine their beliefs and actions and continuously strives to act in ways that upend racism and inequity. Being an antiracist educator requires a critical reflection of our experiences, identities, and historical and societal context. It demands a willingness to examine the implicit and explicit biases we hold, and its impact on our students and colleagues. In addition to reflection, educators must identify how inequities are perpetuated in the school and work to disrupt and end those practices.
