The concern originates from the company founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1937 in Berlin, the Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH (Society for the Preparation of the German People's Car under the National Socialist organization Strength Through Joy). In early 1938, construction began on the first Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg; On September 16 of the same year, the company was renamed "Volkswagenwerk GmbH". After World War II, the factories came under the control of the British military administration.
