Animal Crossing: New Horizons (commonly shortened to ACNH) is the fifth main entry in the Animal Crossing series. As with its predecessors, it is a life simulation game played in real time, where the gameplay centers around a character moving to a deserted island after purchasing a getaway package from Tom Nook. To make the island habitable, the player must perform various daily activities (such as fishing or crafting items) in order to transform the island and develop it into a community of antrophomorphic animals, known collectively as villagers.
Since its release was during the Covid-19 pandemic, the game has been used as a substitute for several social interactions. In 2021, an update was released that allowed the player to work alongside the Happy Home Paradise team and develop vacation homes for the villagers on a large archipelago.
