Vyshyvanka 🇺🇦
ukrainian traditional embroidered shirt
Traditional Vyshyvanka is an embroidered linen shirt
with ruffles, brushes, embroidered inserts and girders, sometimes with a
belt. It is worn by both men and women. Historically, for Ukrainians it
is a powerful symbol of well-being in the family. It was believed that
Vyshyvanka brought good luck and served as a guard, protected from ills,
diseases, envy and all sorts of negative energy. Over the past few years
Vyshyvanka has experienced a real revival, and now is a full-fledged
part of modern culture. And not only because it became important for
Ukrainians to realize their roots and revive traditions, but also
because it is an eye-catching piece of clothing. Most women’s
embroideries are decorated with flower patterns, which can be as
contrasting (red-black, red-blue, yellow-green, blue-yellow), and
multi-colored, consisting of fragments of different colors. The patterns
and colors vary depending on a region of Ukraine and have their own
sacred symbols.
