The Australian white ibis (Threskiornis molucca) is a majestic wading bird that is native to Australia. It has a predominantly white plumage with a bare, black head, long downcurved bill and black legs. Ibis can live up to 28 years and grow up to 75cm. The ibis has been able to reduce it's fear response to humans allowing it to thrive in urban areas. They often rummage through rubbish in search of food, earning themselves the name Bin Chicken. This behaviour was first documented in a free flying flock that was established at Taronga Zoo and it is speculated that this flock may have encouraged visiting flocks to stay in Sydney and adopt the Bin Chicken lifestyle. People often make fun of or complain about urban Ibis without stopping to realise that these majestic birds were here before the cities were and humans led to the current urban Ibis situation.
