Benthic macroinvertebrates are small animals or insect larvae that
live in the water. There are many different types, and they all have
different levels of resistance to pollution. Therefore, they are very
helpful and allow us to measure waterbody health, by analysing their
population ratios.
Taking water samples can provide us with the equivalent of a
"snapshot" of the condition of a waterbody, whereas studying benthic
populations can provide us with a "video". A true indicator
of a waterbody's health.
They are truly fascinating little creatures :)
