The term "archives" refers to archival material that is selected for permanent preservation due to its importance for organization management or academic research and to the diverse values including cultural heritage. This stretches from paper records over audiovisual material to digital records, which were created and accumulated in the course of activities conducted by individuals or organizations. The term "archives" can also refer to the archival institution in which archival records are preserved, arranged and made accessible to the public.
The purpose of archives are to ensure the preservation of archival records that are of historical, political, economic, social or cultural value and/or serve legal certainty and the continuous and efficient management of administrative activities. As evidence pertaining to administrative or legal matters, archives are not only of importance to states and public authorities, but also to citizens as well as corporations and organizations.
The International Council on Archives (ICA) is an international
non-government organization founded on
9 June 1948 with support from UNESCO. It was
created in order to strengthen cooperation among archival
institutions around the world and to develop their activities for
preserving archival records and ensuring their availability for use.
To celebrate the foundation day, the ICA decided 9 June as the
annual International Archives Day to disseminate
its activities and the significant roles of archives.
