The assault on the country has intensified due to the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army on 24 February 2022, supported by Belarus, which allows Russian troops to invade Ukraine from the northwest.

Chernobyl disaster The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the No. 4 reactor at the Soviet-operated Vladimir Lenin Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Chernobyl. The reactor core explosion released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment and large parts of Europe were affected by the radioactive cloud. The nuclear accident resulted from a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators.
