Kintsugi also known as kintsukuroi (golden repair), is the Japanese art
of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with
lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As a
philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an
object, rather than something to disguise. The technique consists in
joining fragments and giving them a new, more refined aspect. Every
repaired piece is unique, because of the randomness with which ceramics
shatters and the irregular patterns formed that are enhanced with the
use of metal.
