My first interaction with home-made glaze was on a summer's night while strolling a market with my sister. We were drawn to a tent with an older gentleman selling his pottery. His work was stunning and incredibly unique featuring glass bottoms that resembled a tide pool. He did this by firing his pieces with some glass inside which melted while in the kiln to create the illusion of water at the bottom of the mug. He went on to explain how he drives to nearby beaches to collect sands, stones and shells to pulverize and use as pigments in his glazing. This opened my eyes to how truly creative the pottery process could be.
