Fun Facts & Observations of an Expatriate
about Dutch and The Netherlands
Which every expat will surely come across
one way or another.
Let's get to know them!
The Country
The Netherlands is a small country, approximately 41,500 square
kilometers where a relatively large number of expats both independent
and free-mover live.
Holland is most commonly used to talk about the Netherlands, "Holland"
is actually just a part of the Netherlands.
The country shares a border with Germany in the East and Belgium in
the South.
The Netherlands boasts some 35,000 kilometers worth of bike paths. Are
you ready?
Nearly one-third of the country lies below sea-level. You better know
how to swim!😁
The People
There are more than 17 million people that live in the country's 12
provinces.
Approximately 87% of the population speaks English very well. Also,
66% can speak German.
They drink a lot of coffee! A typical Dutch drinks approximately 3
cups of coffee per day☕
They are obsessed with equality and reject every form of superiority.
There are more bikes (over 18 million) in the Netherlands than there
are people!🚲
The Food
The Dutch "boterham" - Literally translating to ‘sandwich’, this
humble Dutch snack, which consists of butter and ham (or cheese) on
bread, is anything but glamorous.
Stamppot - Potato mash and leftovers or other ingredients like kale,
endive, cabbage or sauerkraut. Often served with meat on the side
(smoked sausage) and gravy.
Pannenkoek or Pancakes - Dutch pancakes are large enough to fill a big
frying pan and are usually eaten for dinner, rather than for
breakfast. Pancakehouses often serve them with various fillings,
ranging from syrup, powdered sugar and apple to cheese, spinach and
bacon.
Pea soup or erwten soup - is a thick, hearty split pea soup with
sausage and vegetables, often consumed during winter. A day after
preparation, the soup has thickened and more meat is added, after
which it becomes snert. Yum! my personal fave ☺🥣
