There are more than 20,000 species of bees in the world today, indigenous to different areas all over the planet. They can be(e) separate into two different categories: Social and Solitary. All of these types of bees offer their own unique contribution to planet earth.
All bees are pollinators and pollinators are essential for crops, from fruit and veg to coffee and tea, to be able to thrive. There is a famous quote from Albert Einstein
“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years left to live”
and this might be quite true: An incredible 84% of crops grown for human consumption today rely on bees and a select few other insects to pollinate them to increase their yields and quality – that is an absolutely huge amount of food, that we survive off of, that depends on the existence of bees.
Beekeeping is a great way to help boost the bee population, when done right, and it’s also a great hobby!
