I have been traveling since I was just a baby. Reason being my mom is a flight attendant and has been since before I was born. My parents are Caribbean/South American so this influenced the places I have traveled to most. With my mom being born in Aruba and having roots in Curaçao and Anguilla and my dad being born in Guyana and having roots in Portugal and Suriname, it has made me curious about the world around me. I lived in Aruba for a while as a child, but I was born and raised in the U.S. (Brooklyn, New York to be specific. Trust me, it makes a difference. Flatbush to be even more specific) which means I grew up around a lot of different cultures. The area I live in has recently been named “Little Caribbean” so growing up, I realized how different, yet similar we are. How different Haitians can be from Dominicans, yet how similar they are. How we eat curry from Guyana and Trinidad which feels similar and yet there are still those slight details that make us different. Although we are more similar than different, those slight nuances really do make a difference and make us proud of where we come from.
I began traveling on my own (aka without my parents) in 2017. My first trip was inspired by an event most people from Brooklyn are familiar with; the West Indian Labor Day Parade. I didn’t really feel connected to my culture, so I decided to play mas. The term is used for men and women who dress up in costumes and follow a band truck they are playing with. The experience I had was okay, but I wanted more. I knew I had to go to the country where one of the first carnivals started— Trinidad & Tobago. Long story short, I had the time of my life and decided to go to carnival in Barbados (Crop Over) and Miami. I realized how amazing my culture is and I feel very connected to it. I decided it was time to venture out after that because the world is huge and there are so many cultures to explore. Since then, I’ve traveled to a couple of countries in Europe and Africa. I literally travel to places my heart tells me to go.
