Writing Your Story

by Mallory Chesser, MFA 👩🏻‍💻

While earning a graduate degree in creative writing, I discovered the art form that is the personal essay. Beyond its use in college applications, the personal essay, as well as its creative non-fiction cousin, the memoir, can help us make sense of the world. Creative, exploratory, confessional, topical, or a blend of the above, this mode of storytelling holds both artistic and personal value.

Though some dismiss the personal essay as self-indulgent or embarrassing, the self-aware storyteller shares relevant details, focuses the narrative, and tests their assumptions. There is a nice blend of story and reflection. Names may be changed to protect the innocent. Most importantly, the writer tells the truth.

Writing (part of) the story of your life can teach you about yourself, help you connect with the people in your life, and preserve your legacy for generations to come. Nobody can tell your story better than you—but, if you need a little help, let's work together.
