Situated near the Tagus river, the square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço. It was the main residence of the real family, until it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. After that, the square was completely remodeled as part of the rebulding of the city downtown, ordered by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, known as Marquês de Pombal (minister from 1750 to 1777, during the reign of D. José I). Nowadays, the plaza is home to the oldest café in the city, Martinho da Arcada (established in 1782).
It´s a historic castle in the Portuguese capital. The hill on which the castle stands has played an important part in the history of Lisbon, having served as the location of fortifications occupied successively by Romans and Moors, before its conquest by the Portuguese in 1147. Since the 12th century, the castle has served as a royal palace, a military barracks, home of the Torre do Tombo National Archive, etc. Now, it is considered a national monument and museum. It also offers a beautiful view of the city.
This is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome, a catholic religious order, located in Belém, in Lisbon. It is one of the most important examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture, characterized by maratime elements and representations of the discoveries brought from the voyages of Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral. It was classified an UNESCO World Heritage Site (area with legal protection for having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance).
It´s an important boulevard in central Lisbon. Built in 1879, it has since become one of the most prestigious addresses in Portugal and one of Europe´s most popular expensive shopping destinations, as the home to numerous luxury stores, boutiques, and hotels. The Avenida is also home to numerous embassies and diplomatic missions. It links Marquês de Pombal square in the north to Restauradores square, the entrance to the city downtown.
Located in Parque das Nações, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo' 98, it is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe. The oceanarium has a large collection of marine species, such as penguins, sea otters, sharks, rays, seahorses, etc. With a total of 16,000 individuals of 450 species, it is one of the few aquariums in the world to house a sunfish, because of their unique and demanding requirements for care.
