"Argonautika", by Apollonius of Rhodes
Dear friend of the Biblios Book Club, this month we’ll sink on the
sofa, following the events of "Argonautika" ,
an epic poem written in 200 BC by
Apollonius of Rhodes.
The story tells the adventures of Jason and his companions, “the
Argonauts”, who made an incredible journey aboard the ship Argo, from
Thessaly (Greece)
to
Colchis (now Georgia), sailing across the Aegean and Black Seas between monsters and
magic, to recover the Golden Fleece, the mantle of a mythical ram.
Once he arrives in Colchis, Jason must pass the tests imposed by king
Aetas to obtain the Golden Fleece: in the meantime, he comes across
the fatal love of Medea, the king's daughter.
Passion, murder and magic will join the Argonauts to take us on a
mythical journey.
The Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis are just some of the monsters that
the seas crossed by the Argo ship hide...
Having seen the huge success of our latest cycle of reading
“Love&Odyssey” , after some research and thanks to your suggestions in
the Forum, we found this work, rarer than the Odyssey and unknown to
many!
Did you know that Apollonius of Rhodes was the librarian of the Great
Library of Alexandria, in Egypt, and that he himself worked on Homer’s
texts? Last, but not least, the “Argonautica” inspired Virgil’s
Aeneid!

So… let’s dive in and let the reader be the judge! What will be your
favorite author? Homer or Apollonius?
For the more curious, we are planning an online lecture on the Great
library of Alexandria, given by
Ancient-History professor Albert Crawford, of the University of Oxford.
We will all get together to find more about this institution and the
work of Apollonius among the shelves: let us know if you’re
interested to join!
