Located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, Montenegro (meaning Black Mountain) is one of Europe’s youngest nations. It is bordered by the Adriatic Sea and Croatia (southwest), Bosnia and Herzegovina (northwest), Serbia (northeast), Kosovo (east), and Albania (southeast). With a population of less than 700,000 people and a land mass of roughly 14,000 km2, the country is also one of the smallest in the Balkans. However, its proximity to other large European cities (one hour from Rome, two hours from Paris and three hours from London), topographical diversity, and tourist-friendly attitude make it a great place to visit year-round.
Once overlooked in favor of more well-known Mediterranean nations, Montenegro is fast gaining a reputation as an exciting place to travel. It may be small, but this gorgeous nation has a plethora of beauties to explore.
At just under 300km from tip to toe, Montenegro’s coastline crams in some of Europe’s most spectacular seaside scenery. Mountains jut sharply from crystal-clear waters. Ancient walled towns cling to the rocks and dip into the sea. Glistening ports welcome swanky yachts and cruise ships. And the coastal breeze welcomes both locals and tourists.
Whether you start in Herceg Novi at the very top, or Ulcinj at the southern tip, driving along the coastline will provide breathtaking views. Let’s take a look at some of the top spots!
