Mentha, also known as mint , is a strong
fragranced, green-leafed plant. There are around 7500 varieties of mentha,
some of which, are edible. It is used for recipes, teas, seasoning, a natural
animal repellant for other plant or to be eaten straight up! It is also
extremely easy to grow and often used by beginner gardeners (along with other
herbs). This is because it grows rapidly with little assistance and also why
it is considered an invasive species.
While you can start from the seed, you can also propagate or buy the plant
from the store. For my mint plants, I decided to propagate them.
- First, I started off with fresh mint cuttings and cut the petiole as close
to the stem as possible.
- I then placed each one of them into a glass vase or cup so I was able to see
its growth.
- Before planting them, I would cutt of the smaller petioles and placed them
into water so that I would have more plants to work with.
- After a couple days, I started to see roots growing! I would replace the
water if it was a littler murky and cut off any brown pieces to make sure
that it was clean and healthy.
- After around a couple weeks, I planted some of the larger plants (some grew
up to two feet high!) into soil so that they would become voluminous.
- As they are growing in the soil, I am making sure to keep the dirt moist and
give them an adequate amount of sun.
Before this, I started off with only four mint cuttings;
however, I now have ten! Hopefully this inspires you to start your own
little mint garden. If you do, remember to have fun with it!
Happy planting!😉🌿
