Mental health is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own
abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully,
and is able to make a contribution to his or her community", according to the World
Health Organization.
Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and
by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. Exercise has also been found to alleviate
symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal.
