To put it simply, transplanting animal organs, tissues or cells into
people is known as
Xenotransplantation.
With the advent of genome editing, xenotransplantation has witnessed
considerable advancements in recent years.
In 2022, doctors at the university of Maryland medical center,
transplanted a gentetically modified pig heart to a terminally ill
patient,
David Bennett Sr, who was ineligible for for a standard human
heart transplant.
Even though Mr Bennett passed away two months after his transplant, his
case provides hope for many of the patients who are on the waiting list
to recieve vital organs.
