During a trip to Japan in 2018, I collected a couple images of vending
machines spread around the city of Tokyo. Called jihanki in Japanese, you
can purchase everything from regular hot and cold beverages, ice cream,
and snacks to the more unusual like cigarettes, alcohol, umbrellas, train
passes, newspapers, daily necessities, and cooking ingredients like rice,
fresh eggs, dashi, a fish-based soup stock, and natto, fermented soybeans.
Similar to the vending machines, the capsule toy machines called Gashapon,
are also popular in the city. Part of the fun is that you never know which
prize capsule you will get, so itβs fun to try the same machine several
times!
Let's make this page a collective mural of all vending machines in the
city of Tokyo!
