Pico Island Rural Foraging

Foraging is the act of searching for wild resources such as plants, fungi, fruit, roots, barks and nuts to use as food or medicine. It is a great way to spend time outdoors, interact with nature, and even teach your children that food is not grown in the supermarket and that not all medicine comes from a pharmacy.

All over the island there is food that is being grown by nature, and a lot of it is not harvested. This site will function as a treasure map for Pico Island in the Azores Archipelago, displaying information about the localization of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants suitable for foraging.

How to forage

Here are some tips for ethical foraging:

  • Learn to correctly identify the plants, especially mushrooms and berries;
  • Only harvest what you truly need and leave some for others;
  • Always ask permission before foraging on private property;
  • Only forage in areas that are unlikely to have been sprayed.
