Riding of waves has likely existed since humans began swimming in the ocean. Surfing's roots lie in premodern Hawaii and Polynesia, where the sport was practiced by both men and women from all social strata from royalty to commoners. In some parts of the world surfing was used as a way of fishing while in others it was a part of warrior training. A lot has changed since then, excpet that humans still are pursuing the idea of conquering the waves. Find out more about the history of surfing here.
