The domestic cat, Felis catus, is a member of the Felidae
family and has evolved through artificial selection. It is a small
carnivorous mammal.
Domestication is likely to have begun around 7500BC, after African
wildcats were attracted to early human settlements in the Fertile
Crescent by rodents. This interesting relationship between cats and
early farmers grew and lasted thousands of years. Domestication led to
small changes in anatomy and behavior. However, it is likely that some
natural behaviors and characteristics might have made it easier for cats
to be so easily domesticated. These include their small size, social
nature, obvious body language, curiosity, and intelligence.
In 2021, it was estimated that there were around 220 million pet cats
and 480 million stray cats in the world.
I have two cats, Noa and Dennis. Below you can find one of my favorite photos and learn more about them.
