Common Name: Penguins
Scientific Name: Spheniscidae
Penguins are flightless seabirds that live almost exclusively below the
equator. Some island-dwellers can be found in warmer climates, but
most—including emperor, adélie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins—reside in
and around icy Antarctica. There are 18 different species of penguins
around the world, but about two-thirds of penguin species are listed as
threatened on the IUCN Red List, making them one of the most endangered
seabirds.
With so many great zoos and aquariums around the world taking great
efforts to ensure penguins are cared for and being bred to help increase
their numbers to fight extinction, this allows penguin fans (like
myself) the opportunity to see penguins in person.
