Ishikawa is a prefecture on the Japanese island of Honshu. Sitting on the seacoast, the capital city of Kanazawa is home to the “perfect garden” of Kenroku-en, designed to be beautiful during every season. The adjacent Kanazawa Castle, once home to feudal lords, has been partly reconstructed. Across the Asano River, teahouses from the Edo period have been preserved in the Higashi Chaya District.
One of the symbols of Ishikawa is gold leaf, extremely thin leaves of
gold used decoratively on handicrafts or ornaments. Several shops
around Kanazawa let visitors see the gold leaf process and decorate
their own items, including chopsticks, small plates, and mirrors.
Kanazawa produces 99% of all the gold leaf in Japan!
Myoryuji Temple in Kanazawa is full of trap doors, hidden rooms, secret passageways, and maze-like stairwells. These features have earned it the nickname “Ninja Temple,” although the building has no connection to ninja at all.
