GIANT SEQUOIAS AND REDWOODS

The Largest and Tallest Trees

Giant sequoias and coast redwoods are nature's skyscrapers. They look similar, but they acutally have a quite distinctive appearance and require different climates to survive.

Redwoods

Hyperion
Hyperion
The coast redwood, also known as California redwood thrives in the humid climate and is endemic to the fog belt of the coast of California. It can live up to 2000 years and often exceeds 90 meters in height.
Fun Fact!
Hyperion is the tallest living tree in the world and it is located in Redwood National Park in California, USA. It stands nearly at 116 meters tall!

Giant Sequoias

General Sherman
General Sherman
The giant sequoia thrives in higher elevation habitats than the giant redwood. It requires the periodic dry heat of the mountains in order for its cones to open and release seeds. This species of tree is usually shorter than the California redwood, but can still reach heights of up to 94 meters.
Fun Fact!
The General Sherman is the largest living tree in the world!
It stands 83m tall, and is over 11 m in diameter at the base. Sixty feet above the base, the Sherman Tree is 5.3 m in diameter.
