🐝 The Bees We Need 🌱
How can we help to keep their populations safe and healthy?
In recent years, different types of bee species populations have declined due to the effects of climate change, pollution and agricultural practices humans adopt that can harm their colonies. Since there are so many of different types of bees, using blanket conservation methods might not always work. For example, while honeybees are notoriously known for making their homes in hives, bumblebees on the other hand nest low in the ground. So, if you're looking to support that bumblebee nest in your backyard, mowing less would help but it probably would not be as effective for a hive.
With this in mind, there are still little things we can all practice to help #savethebees.
- 🍄 Consider switching from chemical to natural pesticides
- 💧 Keep small dishes of fresh water outside for them to drink
- 🌺 Plant flowers and other plants that are native to your region
- 🍯 Relocate (if possible) hives/nests instead of destroying them
- 🐛 Become familiar with your local natural environment
There are many different changes that can be made to support the insects that pollinate our food and balance the food chain, but these are simply a few suggestions from one beginner to another.
