Papilio zelicaon

Anise Swallowtail Caterpillar

Papilio zelicaon is a beautiful butterfly native to western North America. It is called the Anise Swallowtail because its' diet consists mostly of plants in the fennel family. When they first become caterpillars they eat mostly leaves. As they become more mature caterpilars, they prefer to eat the flowers (as seen in the the above picture that I took while backpacking in Yellowstone National Park).
