ith its super chunky straws and black tapioca pearls bobbing at the
bottom, boba tea — also known as bubble tea, pearl milk tea or just milk
tea — is by nature an eye-catching drink. . It consists of black tea,
milk, ice, and tapioca pearls, in its most basic form. The pearls are
made from tapioca starch, an extract of the South American cassava
plant. It came to Taiwan from Brazil via Southeast Asia between 1895 and
1945. Boba tea isn't new; it's been around for several decades after
being introduced in Taiwan in the late 1980s and quickly gaining
popularity around Asia and the world. But you'd be forgiven for thinking
otherwise based on the recent spurt of new boba tea shops opening around
the region in the past year or two.

Okinawa Pearl Milk Tea
A heavenly combination of luscious milk tea with the natural goodness
of pure sugar. Okinawa milk tea is a traditional drink found in the
Okinawa region of Japan. This tea is made using loose-leaf black tea
leaves, typically Assam, whole milk from local cows, and the final
special ingredient that gives the milk its distinctive taste: Okinawa
brown sugar (or kokuto). The brown sugar, which gives this milk tea
its very special taste, is made differently than the brown sugar that
you might be used to in the United States. Where our brown sugar is
made by adding molasses back into the refined white sugar, Okinawa
brown sugar (kokuto) is made by cooking down sugarcane juice to a
toasted, flavorful, vitamin and mineral-rich crystal sugar.

Ube is similar in appearance to a sweet potato but has a distinctive
purple color that is unique to it. The official Latin name of ube is
Dioscorea Alata, however, you usually find this vegetable referred to
as purple yam or also greater yam. What does ube taste like? Ube /
purple yam has a mild, sweet taste with a hint of nuttiness. This
delicate flavor and its peculiar colour have quickly made it popular
as a base for bubble tea. Purple yam complements particularly well the
taste of milk and coconut milk and the addition of tapioca chewy balls
has quickly made it one of the most popular bubble teas.
