Terry Fox defined perserverance and hope for a generation of Canadians. The Marathon of Hope started as an improbable dream and two friends - one to drive a support van, one to run a ribbon of highway that crossed Canada from coast to coast, and the sturdy belief that they could perform a miracle. Terry Fox, a young athlete who had lost a leg to cancer, was that runner. Incredibly, he ran nearly a marathon a day, for 143 days. Starting at the most eastern end of Canada, he ran through six provinces and covered 3,339 miles. He got two thirds of the way across Canada, running towards his home province of British Columbia. Sadly, he never made it.
Though he had to stop running when his cancer returned, Terry had more than accomplished what he had set out to do and he raised far more money than he had hoped. While cancer had slowed him down, his spirit was unbreakable.
