Niseko is situated on the southwestern coast of Hokkaido, Japan in an ideal location for powder snow. The west to east flow of the wind carries cold air from the Siberian tundra over the relatively warm sea of Japan, sucking up moisture and forming dense clouds along the way. Niseko is positioned directly in the path of this wind, and the combination of moisture, cold air, and upward lift generated as the wind hits the mountains of Niseko creates Niseko’s famous dry powder snow. It isn’t uncommon for Niseko to receive in excess of 15 meters of snow during the winter season making it one of the top major ski destinations for average yearly snowfall.
Backcountry skiing & snowboarding is done on unmarked or unpatrolled areas either inside or outside a ski resort's boundaries. This contrasts with alpine skiing, which is typically done on groomed trails benefiting from a ski patrol.
Those who wish to discover some of Niseko’s fantastic hidden spots and deep-powder stashes are advised to hire a qualified backcountry guide. There are many great places to tour and discover in the vast ranges around the Niseko area. Hiking Mt. Yotei is one of the more challenging backcountry adventures, and should only be attempted with a local guide during fine weather. Visitors can also hire a guide to be shown around the resort area to make the most of a day’s skiing and snowboarding.
